Dear SmoothWall User,

This month? Newsletter features our new Corporate Firewall 4, the replacement for Corporate Server Version 3, which is to be released on Tuesday 14th June 2005.  Corporate Firewall includes more than 100 new features and improvements over Corporate Server 3, yet remains at the same great price.  As usual, customers with Upgrade Assurance will receive Corporate Firewall 4 at no extra cost.

Corporate Firewall


Two years in development, the most significant changes in Corporate Firewall include:

Easier to use and support, better reporting, better monitoring
New reports include outgoing traffic reporting/analysis
Configure what alert, report and status information to display on the main control page
All lists and log files can be sorted on any column
Google-like paginated log file viewers
Log file filtering
New logging controls: log to RAM disk, enable web proxy logging, retention and rotation
Improved Graphical User Interface (GUI) with Help displayed in a pop-up window
IP address ranges can be used on all appropriate configuration pages
Automatic download of software updates
Flexible configuration of the local network interfaces (ie two local, two DMZ, one of each)
Support for latest hardware including a comprehensive range of SATA disk controllers
PPPoE ADSL and PPTP ADSL support
Compact Flash support (for operation without a hard disk)
Software installation, configuration restore/backup from or to a USB (CDROM) device
Secure copy and automatic timed backup of configuration information
DHCP server supports multiple sub-nets (Green and Orange networks)
Improvements to Intrusion Detection System
NTP time server for local network computers
Deep Packet Inspection blocking of port agile Peer-to-Peer (P2P) traffic (SmoothRule)
Although Corporate Firewall is an evolution of Corporate Server, much of the underlying program code has been re-written to create a more flexible security platform for future developments.  Anybody familiar with Corporate Server will quickly feel at home with Corporate Firewall; there are new configuration pages and features, but many of the original Corporate Server 3 features have been made easier to use.

Add-On Modules for Corporate Firewall


The following add-on modules will be available for Corporate Firewall 4:

SmoothTunnel 4.0 ?VPN Gateway, for secure remote access and site-to-site connections
SmoothNode 4.0 ?VPN Remote Node (branch office to central SmoothTunnel gateway)
SmoothRule 4.0 ?Internet Access Control, configure outbound (egress) rules
SmoothMonitor 4.0 ?Firewall monitoring, reporting and incident alerting
SmoothTraffic 4.0 ?Bandwidth Management (Quality of Service)
SmoothHost 4.0 ?Support for multiple public IP addresses (for web and email servers
SmoothGuardian 4.0
Version 4.0 of SmoothGuardian Web Content Filtering module was released at the same time as Advanced Firewall.  SmoothGuardian 4.0 incorporates all the new web content filtering features introduced in Corporate Guardian Version 3.5.

Malicious code detection is a major new feature introduced in version 4.0 of Guardian.  Its function is to detect and remove common in-page exploits from HTML web pages, such as ActiveX controls, Java Applets and Scripts.  Such in-page exploits are not recognised by traditional anti-virus software, yet are often used to install spyware, viruses and Trojan horse software on user PCs.  

URL Security is another new addition to Version 4.0.  Amongst its facilities is the ability to force Google to work in ?afe Search?mode, where Google will not return any pornographic images or similar objectionable material.  

The new malicious URL detection feature helps to prevent users falling victim to phishing identity thefts.  Typical phishing scams start with an email that appears to come from a legitimate source such as PayPal or a bank; however, the HTML email contains a spoof URL to direct the victim to a bogus website.  Of course, the purpose of the bogus site is to seduce the victim into divulging confidential information.  These spoof URLs contain special character patterns to hide the true identity of the bogus website; Guardian intercepts these spoof URLs, blocks the bogus website and warns the user of their lucky escape!

SmoothRule 4.0


The most important new feature introduced in Version 4.0 of SmoothRule is Deep Packet Inspection technology to block KaZaA, eDonkey, BitTorrent and other Peer to Peer (P2P) network traffic.  Most network administrators want to block P2P, as it will consume considerable Internet bandwidth, risks copyright violation and is a major source of viruses, Trojans and spyware.

However, most P2P networks defeat traditional firewall port blocking by using port agile software, routing the P2P traffic through almost any available IP port.  The Deep Packet Inspection capability of SmoothRule 4.0 allows it to detect and block P2P traffic regardless of which port it attempts to use.

Corporate Server 3 customers with Upgrade Assurance


Customers with Upgrade Assurance for Corporate Server 3 will be supplied with the new Corporate Firewall software at no additional cost.  Those customers with support contracts from SmoothWall Resellers should contact their Reseller about the provision of the new software.  Most customers will receive the new software by Electronic Download ?although CD media can be provided at nominal cost.  All customers with Upgrade Assurance for Corporate Server 3 will be contacted by email with software download instructions within one to four weeks of the product release.

Corporate Server customers without Upgrade Assurance


All Corporate Server 3 customers without Upgrade Assurance may purchase Upgrade Assurance for Corporate Server 3 from their SmoothWall Authorised Reseller.  Upgrade Assurance for Corporate Server 3 and its associated modules will be available until June 14th 2005, after which any customer wishing to upgrade to Corporate Firewall will have to buy Version Upgrade software.  Version Upgrade software can be as much as 50% more expensive than the Upgrade Assurance price, so the message is: If you want to upgrade to Corporate Firewall then save money and order the necessary Upgrade Assurance before Version 4 is released.

这个确实好用，性能和稳定性都没得说，大家还是先用3吧，破解恐怕要等很长时间了，3反正一般是够用了
