Dinesh Nair has been working hard to produce a
FreeBSD 6.0-based alpha version of m0n0wall so that we can better
evaluate its features, performance and implications on future
development. Thanks, Dinesh!
The alpha version is called 1.3a1 and is available for generic-pc and
net45xx:

Just to make it clear: this is an *ALPHA* version, and it is only
intended for use by people with some knowledge about FreeBSD. Certain
things don't work yet, for example DHCP on WAN. After booting, you'll
end up in a shell - type "/etc/rc.initial" to get the console setup
menu.
Also, the availability of this image doesn't mean that anything has
been decided in favor of FreeBSD 6.0. We just need prototypes to do
valid comparisons, and if you would like to build prototype m0n0wall
images with another base operating system, you're most welcome to do
that. Also, 1.3a1 uses ipfilter 4 - pf would be another (some might
argue the better) option under FreeBSD 6.0.
I've done some very very cursory throughput testing on a net4801 -
WAN -> LAN throughput with a single TCP connection (iperf) is about
20 Mbps (with 1.2 it's 38 Mbps in the same configuration). Hope we
can still tweak that. |
